FAQs
What types of fencing does PB Forestry use?
We use various fencing types depending on the different needs of your environment.
Timber fence panels remain a popular choice for domestic gardens thanks to their natural appearance and affordability.
For security in commercial or industrial settings, steel palisade fencing offers strength and durability.
Post and rail fencing is well-suited to agricultural sites, while closeboard and feather-edge styles are commonly used in residential areas for added privacy and resilience.
Composite fencing combines wood fibre and recycled plastic for a modern, low-maintenance alternative.
Mesh and chain-link fencing are often used around public sectors such as schools, sports areas, and secure perimeters.
How do I choose the right fence for my property?
Choosing the right fence starts with understanding its purpose. Consider whether it is for privacy, security, boundary marking, or livestock control. The location matters too, especially if the area is exposed to strong winds or harsh conditions.
The material choice will affect both the appearance and durability. Timber gives a classic look, while metal offers greater strength and longevity. Some fences need more upkeep than others, so consider how much maintenance you are prepared to do. You should also check for any local planning rules, particularly in conservation areas.
If you are unsure, PB Forestry can help you assess your needs and recommend the right solution for your site.
What is the typical lifespan of a fence?
The lifespan of a fence depends on the material used and how well it is maintained.
Timber fences can last between 10 and 15 years if they are properly treated and maintained.
Galvanised metal fences, such as palisade or mesh, often last over twenty years due to their resistance to rust and weathering.
Composite fences offer even greater longevity, lasting up to twenty-five years with very little maintenance required. Whatever the type, regular checks and timely repairs will help extend the life of your fence.
Do I need planning permission to install a fence?
In most situations, planning permission is not required as long as the fence is under two metres tall, or under one metre if it borders a public highway.
However, permission may be required if the property is in a conservation area, if the fence forms part of a listed building boundary, or if you are replacing an existing fence with something that looks significantly different.
It is always worth checking with your local planning authority before going ahead with installation.
How much does fence installation cost?
The cost of installing a fence varies depending on several factors.
These include the type of material, the length and height of the fence, site access, and whether the old fence needs to be removed.
On average, timber fencing tends to cost between £ 60 and £ 100 per metre, including labour, while metal or palisade options usually start from around £ 100 per metre and can rise higher depending on the specification.
Bespoke designs and custom gates will increase the overall cost. For an accurate quote, speak to our team at PB Forestry can assess your site and provide a tailored estimate.
