We at PB Forestry are experts at handling complex clearance operations in difficult terrain. In this case study, see how we collaborated with a top UK charity to remove 7km of disused railway line, addressing ecological constraints, public safety hazards, and access restrictions to help turn the route into a bridal and safe cycling route.
A renowned UK charity hired PB Forestry to clear 7 km of a disused railway line for conversion into a shared cycle and bridal way. Steep slopes, embankments, existing infrastructure like bridges, and a lack of wireless connection points along the linear site were among the logistical and safety challenges the project brought. The danger of coming into contact with people who had started utilising the disused line as a makeshift walkway added to these challenges. In order to comply with safety and environmental standards, the work also required close consultation with local authorities.
PB Forestry used a specialised set of small equipment, such as tracked wood chippers, powered hand tools, and a mini-tree shear and mulching head, to deal with the challenging terrain and a few access points. In compliance with a bespoke Method Statement (RAMS) made to fit the client’s site characteristics and the ecological restrictions set by local authorities, the work was completed in progressive parts between access points. Our team made sure that there was as little disruption to the environment as possible by keeping a laser-like concentration on efficiency and safety.
The clean up was carried out incident-free, quickly, and safely. The client was allowed to proceed with development of a safe, accessible walking, wheeling, and cycling route after we resolved the site’s access and safety issues. This project shows that PB Forestry can complete complex specialist construction projects while maintaining strict safety and environmental regulations.
